We have been asked to handle the communications for the Easter Seals "Cool Running" that will be happening on Saturday 03-24-12.
This is a 5K and 8K run in Mt. Airy and we need everyone that can to come out and help with the communications.
No, we are not asking anyone to run in the event, (unless you really want to...) just to do what you do best: talk on the radio!
What would we do? We will be handling the very same duties that were handled this past weekend at the Pilot Mountain Marathon:
Keeping track of the runners
Get help or assistance to those that need it
Pass along other race-related info
We do not have the number of aid / check stations that we will handle yet, but we will need as many members as possible to come out and help. Don't worry, we'll have a position for everyone!
This is a time when we, as a group, can benefit from this event to hone our communication skills and practice properly handling the passing of information clearly and professionally; to have the chance to make sure your radio equipment works and works properly; that your radio batteries work / hold a good charge and your programming is current.
The event occurs all inside of Mt Airy, and the event start/finish lines will be at Veteran's Memorial Park on W. Lebanon St. in Mt. Airy.
Please contact our EC, Dave W4DCA with your interest.
We hope to see you there!
I want to thank everyone that was ready to participate in the handling of the communications for the Easter Seals Cool Runnings Marathon. Despite the severe weather, everyone that had promised to be there was there or were on their way, (rain gear and all), all with smiles on our faces, ready to do the assignments. But due to the weather, the heavy rains that had flooded part of the race course and thunderstorms in and around the area, the decision was made for the safety of the participants of the event, by the Easter Seals officials to call it off and try to make plans for another date. The complete attendance of Surry ARES, and each and everyone’s readiness to do what would have been needed to be done despite the conditions, is a testament to the quality and commitment of those in the Surry County ARES Group. Thank you from not only myself but also from Easter Seals to each and every one. If and when they set another date for the event we will again look to see if we can assist them.
The Easter Seals Cool Runnings walk and marathon has been rescheduled for Saturday May the 19th. As it looks now the event looks to remain the same as originally planned, so we will need the same number of volunteers. I am asking you to please check your schedules and see if you can help out and then let know if you can. Thanks
